Physical Therapy

Setauket Veterinary Hospital is pleased to provide physical therapy services for your pets. Dr. Nadia Mazzani is a certified physical therapist and an expert in the field. Physical rehabilitation in veterinary practice has become increasingly common and will continue to become more accepted.  Physical therapy has been shown to increase the rate of healing and improve joint mobility after an animal has suffered serious physical trauma. Pets need physical therapy after surgery and in geriatric conditions to decrease pain, maintain and regain mobility, maintain and increase muscle mass, and to increase the quality of life.

Physical theraphy for weight loss, improving muscle strength and cardio-respiratory fitness is also emerging as a trend among pet owners. Physical therapy improves joint-motion after surgery and in patients with arthritis.  It is also important in maintaining flexibility, preventing adhesions between soft tissue and bones, and improving muscle strength help prevent further injury to joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Physical therapy sessions last about 30 minutes and are tailored for the pet’s specific needs during their rehabilitation.  Post surgical patients will be evaluated based on their healing progress. Stretching excercises, chemo-therapy and acupuncture may also be applied to the healing process.  Geriatric sessions will be tailored to decrease pain, while increasing the capacity for motion and the overall quality of life.
